Ten Commandments (stone tablets)

THE LORD, THE GOD OF THE HEBREWS, HAS SENT ME TO SAY TO YOU: "LET MY PEOPLE GO, SO THAT THEY MAY WORSHIP ME IN THE DESERT" (EXODUS 7:16).

The Israelites prospered and multiplied in Egypt, but when their increasing numbers became a threat to the Egyptians, they were forced into slavery.

God had not forgotten the Israelites, or the promise made long ago. Although enslaved, they had developed into a nation during their 430-year stay in Egypt, and the time had come for them to take possession of the promised land. Speaking from within a burning bush, God commissioned Moses to lead his people out of slavery. Moses pleaded with Pharaoh to let his people go, and when Pharaoh refused, God tormented the Egyptians with a series of plagues until Pharaoh was forced to relent. When Pharaoh changed his mind and sent his armies in pursuit, God delivered the Israelites by parting the waters of the Red Sea.

With a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, God led the Israelites in a forty-year trek to the promised land. They camped and marched in twelve tribes descended from the twelve sons of Jacob, and probably numbered well over two million people.
